Cycle: prehistoric consoles/first generation. Magnavox Odyssey 400 “200+300 = 400”
Today in the field of our vision will be Magnavox Odyssey 400. The need for the release of this prefix arose in connection that in 76, Magnavox had two console models on the market that did not implement all technical capabilities sufficiently. Magnavox Odyssey 200 – which was more technological in terms of ways to control the prefix itself (vertical and horizontal movement, the movement of the ball), but in which there was no digital calculation of glasses on the screen and “ball physics”. And Magnavox Odyssey 300, which, thanks to another chip, had digital calculation of glasses and “ball physics”, but at the same time was deprived of the opportunity to move the platforms horizontally and “twist” the ball.
Combine the strengths of these two consoles and was called upon the Magnavox Odyssey 400.
Price/repair/set
The console comes out at the end of 76 years (a gap with 300 model in just a couple of months), at a price of $ 100, which at the moment is about $ 500 (different inflation calculators give a result from 450 to 550), or approximately 50,000 rubles. (For almost 50 years, the prices of the consoles have not changed much).
T.To. chip AY-3-8500 used in 300 https://nonukcasinosites.co.uk/1-pound-deposit/ models did not fit for more complicated control, the most logical solution was to use the chip Ti SN764XX which was used in 200 model, but with a finite of an additional chip from Texas Instruments responsible for calculating points. Also in the prefix was the chip responsible for sound signals. The speaker was built into the console itself.
Now the prefix was able, after a clogged ball, to show on the screen the number of points of both players (as in the example below). And after the victory on the screen, a large letter “w” appeared.
Not “w” and not “a” w “
These changes in the filling entailed the corresponding change in the case. The sliders who were responsible for counting the glasses disappeared from him. Otherwise, on the console case – standard. At the top there are two verniers allowing to configure speed and centering the “grid”. Below are the switches of the games and the number of “players” (remember that this word is convention, and in fact it adds excess “oar”)
Of the interesting observations – the logic of the location of the vernier of control, which did not immediately occur to me. They are located on the left to the right T. e. Not that the first thing comes to mind-so that the upper Werner on both sides is “up and down”, and the lower “twisted ball”. And the logical location makes control the same for each player, when the “top-niz” in the right hand of each player, and the “twisted ball” in the left. T.e. located mirror.
I ask you to pay attention to the logic of the location of the vernier of the control, to which I would not immediately do it. (However, this is more about my stupidity than about the genius of engineers)
In all other respects, the prefix was an absolute copy of the 200 model and supported all previously available chips, which was reflected on its box.
On the left – three available games “Hockey”, “Tennis”, “Squash”, the calculation of points is displayed on the TV, so that you immediately understand why you should pay extra 30 bucks compared to 200 model.
Well, the classic “works on any TV, color or black white”-which is comical, taking into account the fact that the console was able to play only a black and white picture. Counting points, automatic feed, etc. D.
Having opened the box, the buyer saw a standard delivery set for that time. Console itself, power supply, adapter on the antenna and instructions for use.
